Monks Wood, North Shields Surface Attenuation

We are currently on site adjacent to Beach Road. Our scheme is to separate surface water flows from the combined sewerage system and store the excessive flows during storms. To do this, we are constructing new surface water and combined sewers together with a series of cascading basins in which to hold back the flows until the storm subsides and the existing sewerage system can accept the storm water.

Project updates

Update by Anthony Birkett

Hi Everyone

I bring news of the footpaths which cross our working area....

The good news is that on friday 12 July 2019, we will reopen the footpath at Ludlaw Avenue. This means that for at least the next couple of weeks, both this and the footpath from Whitecliff Avenue will be open!

However, the not so good news is that we will need to close the footpath from Whitehouse Lane (by the school). This will be closed for up to three weeks.

Its not all good news though, as we will still need to close the Whitecliffe footpath at some point - updates to follow on that one, but it won't be necessary for at least a couple of weeks.

In other news, we're ahead of schedule on the trenchless crossing of Beach Road, we expected this to be the end of the month, but we're making preparations now with a view to starting earlier.

Regards

Tony

Hi

We've have quite a productive week since its been dry all week. The main drainage is right upto Whitehouse Lane. For the safety of the public we'll have to close this path and re-open the path at Ludlaw Avenue. A pedestrian diversion will be in place via Ludlaw Avenue. The footpath at Ludlaw Avenue is being reinstated which we expect to have open by Thursday next week. Balfour Beattie Utilities have been working with us to install electric ducts in this footpath so it doesn't need to be closed again at later date. The large diameter overspill manhole next to the school is almost finished, the shoring will all be removed today.

We are almost a point where we can start the basins now we have the inlet structure cast, so this will be happening in the next couple of weeks.

Hi Everyone

This week has been another busy one on site. We have made good progress in the construction of the manhole/combined sewer chamber that we are working on. We have now poured concrete up to a certain point and will continue with this construction into next week.

We have also been working on the pipework around the vortex chamber where we have tied in the storm pipework and grouted the existing sewer in the same area. There is more pipework to go in here and we have been prepping for the trench that we will need to dig.

Next week Northern Power Grid have contracted Balfour Beatty to install some ducts under the footpath from Ludlow Avenue. We have been aware that they needed to do this work so in the spirit of collaboration have worked together to allow them to carry out this work while we are working in the area so they don’t have to come back and close the area off later in the year. This work is expected to take 2 weeks and once complete, we should be able to open up this footpath.

We will then work towards the little path to the side of the school.

As you will have noticed it has been quite muddy on site, as a result, we’ve been employing a road sweeper in the area twice a day to try and keep on top of the roads

Hi

We are back on target this week with the site drying out after all of the horrible weather recently. Drainage is ongoing with 3 gangs between Ludlaw Avenue and Whitehouse Primary School. We'll be starting to reinstate the footpath between Ludluw Avenue and Beach Road, so that should be re-opened in a couple of weeks time.

As Tony mentioned yesterday, we have a solution to install the drainage over Beach Road using trenchless methods. I'll post an update as soon as we have a confirmed date to start this work.

Update by Anthony Birkett

Hi Everyone

In my last update I mentioned that we had come across rocky ground when trying to drill under Beach Road - as a result we had to temporarily stop the drilling and went through the process of discussing the options available to complete the job. It was a choice between continuing with the drilling under the road or digging a trench across the road which would have resulted in a road closure.

After investigating both options, it has been decided that we will continue with the drilling operation. A new drill head will be shipped in from abroad to help us break through the rock. This will be with us by the end of July so the trenchless crossing is expected to be completed by the middle of August. This isn't expected to change the completion date of overall project.

Update by Simon Bright

Hi

The weather this week hasn't helped at all, excavations have been flooded out, the route from the compound has been inaccessible and the men have been working in slop!

We've still managed to proceed slowly, having completed 2 manholes next to Ludlaw Avenue and poured the base to the manhole along side the existing pipe next to Whitehouse Primary School.

It has been a constant battle to keep mud off crossing points and the road, however, road brushes are booked daily and we are brushing up as required. Hopefully this is the end of the prolonged rain for the rest of the summer.

Update by Simon Bright

Hi

Things are back on track, the main drainage is moving on nicely as we now have three gangs. The vortex chamber is now in the ground so we'll connect the main surface water up next week.

Several meetings have been held with various parties regarding the road crossing over to Monks Wood, we'll hopefully have an answer next week as to how we will proceed with that operation.

Hi

The Auger Bore crossing from the school filed over to Monks Wood is still on hold awaiting a specialist rock bursting drilling machine.

On the main site, we are continuing with the drainage tie-in's and installation of a vortex chamber. This work to install the Vortex Chamber will continue throughout next week.

Hi Everyone

Simon is off site this week, so Adam has provided the information for this week's portal update - thanks Adam!

On the trenchless crossing of Beach Road, we managed to get the pilots through last Friday. This enabled us to start drilling through on Monday this week - its quite rocky underground, so this is slowing us down a little and we may need to order in a specialist piece of equipment from Germany to speed things up.

With the drainage on the other side of the road, we continue to construct the manholes and associated drainage and will need to switch the footpath closures in the near future. We'll let you know when this will be nearer the time.

In the meantime, enjoy the mini-burst of good weather and I hope it continues into the weekend!
