Good afternoon,

The crew continue to monitor the North Field and Birtley Sewerage Treatment Works and plan to rotavate and seed in the Spring with fencing and hedgerow reinstatement to be carried out in November.

Pipe welding and construction of the washout chamber and air valve are complete. The team will need to access the wash out chamber on Greenford Lane, which will require 2 way traffic lights, a date is to be confirmed. Concrete reinstatement works are ongoing inside Birtley Sewerage Treatment Works.

Work has commenced at Lamesley pump station for the installation of an over pump chamber, wash out chamber and new pipework replacement, which is expected to be completed in 4-6 weeks.

As you may have seen due to the weather conditions Greenford Lane has been flooding in the location of the recent road closure. The excavations we have completed are linked to the work being carried out to improve the rising main, this has not affected the levels or drainage on the road.

Please contact us direct if you have any questions at nwl.customer@esh.uk.com.

Update by Rachel Rutter

Good afternoon

You may have received the most recent update from Northumbrian Water regarding the next stage in our work.

To avoid carrying out work on an ecologically and environmentally sensitive area, we need to lay part of the new pipework in Greenford Lane, near Birtley Sewage Treatment Works. To safely carry out this work, we will be required to close part of the road at Greenford Lane from 14 August 2023 for approximately 8 weeks. Diversions will be clearly signposted and in place for the duration of this work and I have updated the traffic management section on this page which shows exactly where the road closure will be.

In an attempt to re-open the road at the earliest opportunity, the ESH Stantec team will be working extended working hours - generally Monday to Thursday from 7.30am to 7:30pm & Fridays 7.30am to 6:00pm. Work may also be carried out on a Saturday. The team will be utilising trenchless technology as opposed to traditional open cut excavations, which we hope will also progress the work quicker.

We understand and fully appreciate that this may cause you an inconvenience when travelling and if you have any concerns at all, please contact us using the details on the letter issued or nwl.customer@esh.uk.com and we will of course help you wherever we can. I’d like to thank you in advance for your patience and understanding which we really do appreciate whilst this essential work goes ahead.

Thank you
