To replace a failing pumping main from Lamesley Sewage Pumping Station to Birtley Sewage Treatment Works.

Good morning all, 

This week the crew have been working on the below:

North Field & Haggs Lane

  • The Archaeological works are recommencing from 03 April 2023 in the North Field
  • Haggs Lane Bridge works will recommence from 11 April 2023 with the road closed for approximately 6 weeks.

Greenford Lane

  • Installation of the Layby completed at the entrance to the Central Fields, construction of High point air valve at this location has started and is ongoing.
  • Continuation with excavation, pipework installation and concrete backfill is ongoing up until 06 April 2023

Central Fields

  • Works will recommence 20 March 2023 for the excavation, installation of the Rising Main Pipework.

Birtley STW

  • Excavation & Rising main installation through the South Reed Beds location is ongoing.

Moor Mill Lane/Greenford Lane 

  • North & South Verge - Reinstatement works are now completed.

Last week the team completed the following work:

North Field & Haggs Lane

  • The section over the Bridge on Haggs Lane are in delay due to design issues. This section of works will require the road closure again, dates likely to be April/May 23. Continuing to liaise with Gateshead Council to progress this.

Greenford Lane

  • Drilling from chamber excavation under the existing culvert has been completed.
  • Washout Chamber construction underway and continuation with the pipework installation

Birtley STW

  • Window sampling carried out this week to check the ground conditions of the Newt Habitat results will determine the second attempt at directional drilling.
  • Rising main installation through the Reed Beds location is ongoing.

Moor Mill Lane/Greenford Lane

  • South Chamber 8 – Pipework Connection and chamber Construction completed last week, and reinstatement works have commenced.
  • North Chamber 7 – Pipework and chamber construction to be carried out WC 27th February 2023.

The crew continued to progress with the following work:

North Field & Haggs Lane

  • The section over the Bridge on Haggs Lane are in delay due to design issues. This section of works will require the road closure again, dates likely to be April/May 23. Continuing to liaise with Gateshead Council to progress this.

Greenford Lane

  • Trenchless drilling preparation works completed early this week. Trenchless drilling to commence today, drilling from chamber excavation under the existing culvert.
  • Following drilling under culvert, Chamber to be constructed, and pipe laying to continue.

Birtley STW

  • Directional drill under Newt Habitat area commenced Tuesday 31st January. Unexpected ground conditions encountered, and drilling abandoned until alterative solution can be reached.
  • Rising main install through reed beds and crossing of Bowes Railway path re-commenced late last week. Works ongoing.

Moor Mill Lane/Greenford Lane

  • Directional drill under Moor Mill Lane completed late last week.
  • Construction of chambers to either end of this section commenced late last week, works on going. Along with connecting through to pipework already installed through Birtley STW reed beds.

Greenford Lane

  • Traffic management installed to junction of Greenford Lane and Kibblesworth Bank on Monday 23rd January 2023.
  • Uncharted existing drain through proposed drive pit. Drain repaired late last week, and Pit moved back to avoid clash.
  • New drive pit installation on going, along with reception pit for trenchless drilling of new main under Greenford Lane culvert. Drilling to this section next week.
  • Following drilling under culvert, Chamber to be constructed, and pipe laying to continue.

Birtley STW

  • Preparation works to allow directional drill under Newt Habitation area within Birtley sewage treatment works, to commenced Monday 23rd Jan, and completed 30th Jan.
  • Directional drill under Newt Habitat area commenced Tuesday 31st January. Unexpected ground conditions encountered, and drilling abandoned until alterative solution can be reached.
  • Rising main install through reed beds and crossing of Bowes Railway path to re-commence Wednesday 1st Feb. Path to remain open, but reduced in width.
  • Directional drill to this and other areas planned for W/C 30th Jan, for approx. 2 weeks.

Moor Mill Lane/Greenford Lane

  • Excavation works for directional drill preparation completed 31st January
  • Directional drill works planned to start Thursday 2nd February.
  • Traffic management, consisting of lane closure and 4-way lights planned for Thursday 2nd Feb for approx. 1 week, to allow access for the directional drilling to commence.

  • Hedge cut out to Northern field, in line of the new main to undertaken late last week.

Greenford Lane

  • Slow progress due to bad ground conditions in the section. Road temporarily reinstated on Friday 20th Jan, and TM removed Monday 23rd Jan.
  • Traffic management installed to junction of Greenford Lane and Kibbles worth Bank on Monday 23rd Jan. works to commence to allow directional drill under culvert to this area.

Birtley STW

  • Rising main install in this section, works on going.
  • Crossing of the Bowes Railway path planned for Late January 23. Path to remain open but reduced in width.
  • Preparation works to allow directional drill under Newt Habitation area within Birtley sewage treatment works, to commence Monday 23rd Jan.
  • Directional drill to this and other areas planned for W/C 30th Jan, for approx. 2 weeks.

North Field & Haggs Lane

  • The section over the Bridge on Haggs Lane are in delay due to design issues. This section of works will require the road closure again, dates likely to be April/May 23.
  • Hedge cut out to Northern field, online of new main to undertaken Late next week.

Greenford Lane

  • Works recommence to Greenford Lane this week, with new trench support following unexpected ground conditions encountered before the Christmas break.
  • Road reinstatement of current section planned for Friday 20th January.
  • Works to move up to Junction of Greenford Lane and Kibblesworth Bank on Monday 23rd January. This is to prepare for the directional drill to pass beneath the existing culvert at this location.

Birtley STW

  • Rising main install in these sections recommenced on 9th January, following the Christmas break.
  • Crossing of the Bowes Railway path planned for Mid-January 23. Path to remain open but reduced in width.

Moor Mill Lane/Greenford lane

  • Lane closure for 1 week, 9th January. This is to allow safe creation of access point to this area, and prep work to allow the directional drill of new rising main under the junction. This is to reduce disruption to the traffic using these roads.
  • Access point works completed this week, and lane closure to come off Friday 13th January evening.
  • Continue with excavation works for Directional drilling access pits.

Good afternoon

The snow didnt last long did it. Works progressing week ending 18/12/2022:

North Field & Haggs Lane

  • The section over the Bridge on Haggs Lane are in delay due to design issues. This section of works will require the road closure again, date to be confirmed.

Greenford Lane

  • Trial hole to existing culvert at the junction of Greenford Lane and Kibblesworth bank completed, with temporary tarmac reinstatement on Friday 9th December. Junction of Kibblesworth bank and Greenford lane, Traffic management removed 12th December.
  • Traffic management set up on Greenford Lane by Ravensworth Arms to allow new rising main install to continue on 12th December.
  • Installation of new rising main to Greenford Lane delayed, unexpected weak ground conditions encountered. Alternative trench support solutions requested, and equipment due after Christmas break.
  • Excavation to Greenford lane was temporarily backfilled to make safe, and temporary tarmac reinstatement due 21st December, to allow road to reopen on 22nd December.
  • Traffic management to recommence on Monday 9th January 2023, to allow new rising main to continue on Greenford Lane.

Birtley STW

  • Rising main install in these sections is on going. New install to cease mid week, to allow prep for Christmas break.
  • Crossing of the Bowes Railway path planned for Mid January 2023. Path to remain open, but reduced in width.

Moor Mill Lane/Greenford lane

Lane closure planned for 1 week, 9th January. This is to allow safe creation of access point to this area, and prep work to allow the directional drill of new rising main under the junction. This is to reduce disruption to the traffic using these roads.

On Friday 23 December 2022 the site will close down for the Christmas and New Year period. Our site team will return to work on Monday 9 January 2023. Northumbrian Water will be in contact in the New Year to provide a further update on the progress of our works.

  • Installation of new rising main to central fields suspended, due to works being reprioritised elsewhere on site due to further environmental constraints.
  • Installation of new rising main to Greenford Lane is ongoing.
  • Installation of chamber to Greenford Lane completed, along with tarmac reinstatements outside the Ravensworth Arms.
  • Trial hole to existing culvert at the junction of Greenford Lane and Kibblesworth bank to be completed late this week, and traffic management removed on Monday morning.
  • Recommence new pipe installation Outside Ravensworth Arms heading south. This section will be reinstated and road opened up for the Christmas break, and recommence on the 9th January 23.

Birtley STW

  • Rising Main install to rear of filter beds, works ongoing.
  • Install of new rising main to reed beds section commence early this week including prep to allow access for machinery. Crossing of the Bowes Railway path planned for Mid January 23. Path to remain open but reduced in width.

Good afternoon,

We recently wrote to residents advising on Thursday 1 December 2022 we will be moving the traffic management from the current location to the junction of Greenford Lane and Kibblesworth Bank, for a period of 1 week to complete trial holes. Due to unforeseen circumstances this will now be moved on Tuesday 6 December 2022 for 1 week.

Following the completion of the trial holes the team will return the traffic management to outside of the Ravensworth Arms until Friday 23 December 2022.  Our traffic management and working area will be removed from Greenford Lave over the Christmas and New Year period.  Our team will return to site on Monday 9 January 2023 to the Greenford Lane location.

Work on the Central fields will be on hold from Monday 5 December 2022 until after the new year.
