Lamesley Rising Main Replacement

To replace a failing pumping main from Lamesley Sewage Pumping Station to Birtley Sewage Treatment Works.

Good morning, 

As you are aware Esh-Stantec on behalf of Northumbrian Water have traffic management on Greenford Lane, outside of the Ravensworth Arms. On Thursday 1 December 2022 we will be moving the traffic management from the current location to the junction of Greenford Lane and Kibblesworth Bank, for a period of 1 week to complete trial holes.

Following the completion of the trial holes the team will return the traffic management to outside of the Ravensworth Arms until Friday 23 December 2022.  Our traffic management and working area will be removed from Greenford Lave over the Christmas and New Year period.  Our team will return to site on Monday 9 January 2023 to the Greenford Lane location.

It is that time of week where we let you know our progress:

North Field & Haggs Lane

  • The section over the Bridge on Haggs Lane are in delay due to design issues. This section of works will require the road closure again, date to be confirmed.
  • Field is flooded following yesterdays heavy rain.

Greenford Lane & Central fields

  • Installation of new rising main to central fields is on going.  
  • Installation of new rising main to Greenford Lane is on going.
  • Installation of chamber to Greenford lane 80% complete, remainder to be compete early next week and new rising main pipe to continue next week.
  • Work area to central fields flooding following heavy rain from yesterday.

Birtley STW

  • Rising Main install to rear of filter beds, works ongoing.
  • Work area flooded due to heavy rain yesterday.

  • Investigation surveys for archaeological findings, are complete for now. Alternative options are being explored for installing this section of the rising main.
  • The section over the Bridge on Haggs Lane are in delay due to design issues.

Greenford Lane & Central fields

  • Installation of new rising main to central fields is on going.  
  • Installation of new rising main to Greenford Lane is on going.
  • Tarmac reinstatements up to the first Bungalow completed on Monday.
  • Lane closure moved up to next section, and road was cut ready for new works to continue.
  • Greenford lane pipe install moved up on Tuesday this week. We will be installing a chamber in this location next week.

Birtley STW

  • Rising Main install to rear of filter beds, works are ongoing.

  • Installation of new rising main to central fields commenced on the Tuesday 18 October, installation of this section is on going.  
  • Installation of new rising main to Greenford Lane is on going.
  • Tarmac reinstatements planned for Monday 7 November
  • Greenford lane pipe install due move up and continue along the road, on Tuesday 8 November.

Birtley STW

  • Rising Main installed to rear of filter beds, works ongoing.

The crew's progression last week:

North Field & Haggs Lane

  • Investigation surveys ongoing for archaeological findings. 
  • Due to design issues the section over the Bridge on Haggs Lane is delayed, a further update will be provided once we have confirmation.

Greenford Lane – Central fields

  • The compound is now completed and set up in the central fields
  • Topsoil striping of the working corridor to be completed for the northern most two fields.
  • Installation of new rising main to commence Tuesday 18th October from northern end of fields, heading towards Moor Mill Lane.
  • Hedge removal to central field work corridor completed last Tuesday.
  • Installation of new rising main to Greenford Lane commenced last week. Works ongoing.

Birtley STW

  • Rising Main installation to the rear of the filter beds is ongoing.

Works planned for next week:

  • The archaeological investigations in North field.
  • Continue with Greenford Lane section of rising main installation.
  • Reinstate first section of rising main on Greenford lane and move up lane closure early next week.
  • Continue new rising main installation through central fields off Greenford Lane.  
  • Continue with Rising Main install in Birtley STW to rear of filter beds.

  • Haggs lane section of the new pipe installed, and road reinstatement completed Friday. Road to reopen on Monday morning.  
  • The section over the Bridge on Haggs Lane are in delay due to design issues. This section of works will require the road closure again, date to be confirmed.

Greenford Lane – Central fields

  • Compound set up in central fields expected to be complete today.
  • Topsoil striping of working corridor to continue over next week.
  • Hedge removal to central field work corridor planned for Monday/Tuesday next week, to allow preperation and installation of new rising main.

Birtley STW

  • Continue trapping out to reed bed area, for newt protection purposes.
  • Topsoil strip of first section complete, to rear of the filter beds.
  • Commence install of new rising main to same area.

Works planned for next week:

  • Continue with archaeological investigations in North field.
  • Remove road closure on Haggs Lane Monday.
  • Install lane closure to Greenford lane, from Haggs lane junction.
  • Commence installation of new rising main, starting from the Haggs Lane junction.
  • Continue with preperation work for new rising main installation in central fields off Greenford lane.

This week the crew have progressed with the following:

  • Investigation surveys ongoing for archaeological findings. 
  • Works in North field wrapped up due to Wading Bird constraint coming into effect from 1st October. Works to complete this section due to recommence in Spring 2023.
  • Haggs lane section of new pipe has been installed expected to be complete on 10th October.
  • The section over the Bridge on Haggs Lane are delayed due to design issues. Further trial holes to identify possible route over bridge conducted early this week.

Greenford Lane – Central fields

  • Demarcation fencing to field work areas completed early this week.
  • Commence compound setup in central fields, due to complete next week.

Birtley STW

  • Trapping out to reed bed area continues, for newt protection purposes.
  • Commence topsoil strip and prep for install of new rising main to rear of filter beds.

Works planned for next week:

  • Archaeological investigations in North field continue.
  • Rising main installation in Haggs Lane, and tarmac reinstatements planned to be complete late next week, with road closure removed planned for Monday 10th October.
  • Compound installation in central fields.
  • Continue with Rising Main install in Birtley STW to rear of filter beds.

  • Continuing with the new rising main installation in the North field.
  • Road closure implemented on Tuesday 20th September, for installation of the rising main to Haggs Lane. Expected to be complete in approx. 3-4 weeks.
  • Commenced rising main installation through haggs lane.

Newt Fencing Installation – Birtley STW

  • Continue trapping out to reed bed area, for newt protection purposes.

Works planned for next week:

  • Additional trial holes to Haggs Lane bridge verge, to identify possible route for bridge crossing.
  • Continue with rising main installation in North field and Haggs Lane.
  • Archaeological investigations in North field are ongoing.
  • The team continue working area fencing to Central fields, off Greenford Lane.

Good afternoon all, 

Works progression so far:

North Field

  • Topsoil Strip and Bund compaction was completed Friday 9th September.
  • Investigation surveys are ongoing for archaeological findings during the topsoil strip
  • Commence new rising main install on Monday 12th September, from the North boundary of field, works ongoing.

Newt Fencing Installation

  • The Newt fencing installation and snagging in the reed bed location was completed 13th September
  • Commence trapping out to the above, for newt protection purposes.

Works planned for next week:

  • Commence installation of rising main to Haggs Lane, under road closure, from Lamesley road roundabout back to junction with Greenford Lane.
  • Continue with rising main installation in North field and with the archaeological investigations in North field.
  • Fencing to Central fields off Greeenford Lane will commence.

Good afternoon all, 

The crew are making great progress, last week they set up the compound in the North Field of Haggs Lane.

They started the topsoil strip and bund compaction, whilst the investigation surveys are ongoing for archaeological finding.

Tree pruning has been completed around the filter tanks at Birtley STW and installation of Newt fencing and snagging in the reed bed is ongoing but expected to complete Friday 9 September 2022.

A road closure on Haggs Lane will also in place from 19 September 2022 for 4 weeks.
